Viburnum Suspensum 'Sandankwa' is a fast growing shrub that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 8B through 11. It matures to an average height of 6 feet to 12 feet and an average width of 6 feet to 15 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the spring Sandankwa Viburnum produces light pink flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts butterflies, wildlife, visual attention and songbirds / birds and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat. If you like fragrance, Viburnum Suspensum 'Sandankwa' has fragrant foliage.
Sandankwa Viburnum can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, as a buffer or screen, as a background, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, in landscape beds or islands, to frame the corners of a home or other building or in small groupings and also in theme gardens, cottage gardens or perennial gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
While most northern gardeners haven't heard of Sandankwa Viburnum, many in southern regions have used this popular landscaping plant. Sandankwa is a handsome evergreen with a spreading habit and very interesting course textured foliage. In late winter and sporadically through the spring and summer Sadankwa produces beautiful small, waxy tubular white to pink flower clusters. The flowers give way to red berries in fall. It's foliage is fragrant and aromatic. A wonderful selection, Sadankwa creates interest in the garden throughout most of the year.
Uses
Excelent for use as a single specimen shrub, in smaller groupings, flowering shrub borders, natural hedge, visual screen or wind and noise buffers, home foundation plantings, espalier (grown flat against a wall), butterfly gardens, wildlife gardens, asian theme gardens, cottage gardens, and woodland borders.
Culture & Care Tips
Prefers well drained soil with average water needs. When planting in heavier soils use a 50/50 mix of soil amendment or organic matter to native soil. Prune as necessary to maintain desired shape.
